August will find the Sundance Channel spotlighting the artists and labels leading the new wave of American roots music. The four-part series “Keeping Time: New Music from America’s Roots” will premiere Aug. 7.
Each half-hour segment will focus on a different aspect of the movement, beginning with religion, and touching on acoustic music, independent labels and finally, performance. New episodes will bow each Thursday in August at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT.
Among the artists who will be featured are Gillian Welch, Andy Statman, Robert Randolph and Ulali (“Pickin’ My Religion,” Aug. 7), Nickel Creek (“Acoustic Innovators,” Aug. 14), T Model Ford, the Black Keys, the Waco Brothers, Kelly Hogan, Shemekia Copeland and Cory Branan (“Buy This Record,” Aug. 21), and the Trachtenburg Family Slide Show Players, Joe Firstman, Toshi Reagon and Richard Julian (“Art of Song,” Aug. 28).
“Keeping Time” was developed by director Gillian Grisman, daughter of noted mandolinist David Grisman, and producer Alicia Sams. The pair previously worked on Grisman’s 2000 documentary “Grateful Dawg,” about her father and his musical relationship with late Grateful Dead bandleader Jerry Garcia.
