The stars of “Under the Electric Sky,” the documentary on the Electric Daisy Carnival, are not the famous DJs who play the Las Vegas event, Above and Beyond, Tiesto, Avicii. It’s a couple reuniting after not seeing each other for a month, a crew of bros from Massachusetts, a wheelchair-bound man from the California desert and a young woman with anxiety issues.
“It’s about the experience and the most important element is the crowd,” says Pasquale Rotella, founder of Insomniac which stages Electric Daisy and an executive producer of the 3D film. “You go to connect. That’s something that’s difficult to understand if you come from pop, rock, hip-hop or rock. For us it was a no-brainer. I consider [the audience] the headliners. Everything is important, but the fans just a little bit more.”
Rotella and “Under the Electric Sky” directors Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz–known for “Top Chef” on Bravo, producing the first Justin Bieber film and directing Katy Perry’s film–sat down with Billboard to discuss the film, EDM culture and where Electric Daisy is headed.
