U.K. pop-soul trio Sugababes finally brought Black Eyed Peas’ six-week run at No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart to an end yesterday (Oct. 19). “Hole in the Head” (Universal Island), from Sugababes’ new album, “Three,” went straight to the top. It’s their third British No. 1 after last year’s “Freak Like Me” and “Round Round.” Dido’s “Life for Rent” (Cheeky/Arista) held onto No. 1 on the album chart, despite a strong No. 2 debut for Sheryl Crow’s “The Very Best Of” (A&M).
Reggae star Kevin Lyttle scored his first major U.K. success as “Turn Me On” (Atlantic) hit No. 2 on the new singles survey, followed by the Black Eyed Peas’ “Where Is the Love,” which fell to No. 3. There was a No. 5 start for 50 Cent’s “P.I.M.P.” (Interscope), a No. 6 entry for “Maybe” (19) by Emma, a.k.a. former Spice Girl Emma Bunton and a No. 7 debut for Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Mixed Up World” (Polydor). R.E.M. rounded out the new entries at No. 8 with “Bad Day” (Warner Bros.).
Crow’s arrival in the runner-up spot on the album chart is notable not only because the American perennial outsold Travis’ “12 Memories” (Independiente), which debuted at No. 3, but because it’s Crow’s third album in a row to debut at No. 2 in the U.K. New at No. 7 was the TV-advertised “The Very Best of Cat Stevens” (UMTV), the fourth career retrospective by the singer/songwriter to chart in the U.K. and the third in the past 13 years.
There was a new entry at No. 11 for “At the End of the Day” (Rosette) by Irish crooner Daniel O’Donnell, who is consistently ignored by most of the mainstream media but sells records in vast quantities. He now has 19 hit albums to his name in a 15-year chart career. Emerging Welsh rock act Funeral For A Friend debuted at No. 12 with “Casually Dressed and Deep in Conversation” (Infectious), followed by young pop group S Club 8 at No. 13 with “Sundown” (Polydor).
Further down the chart, there was a No. 30 start for the Sam Cooke compilation “The Man and his Music 1951-1964” (ABKCO), marking only the second-ever chart appearance for the late legend. There was also a disappointing No. 36 entry for Blondie’s new set “The Curse of Blondie” (Epic).
