Sufjan Stevens will showcase half-a-dozen new songs on a fall tour, which will play primarily seated venues such as Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, New York’s Town Hall and Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theatre. Stevens will be backed on the road by a string ensemble that will include as many as eight members.
According to his spokesperson, Stevens will also be doing away with the costumes and theatricality of his prior bands in favor of a more “nuanced and sophisticated” approach. The tour is not intended to promote “The Avalanche,” Stevens’ upcoming album of outtakes from his 2005 “Illinois” project.
The support act for the outing will be singer/songwriter Shara Worden, who records as My Brightest Diamond. Her debut album, “Bring Me the Workhorse,” is due Aug. 22 on Stevens’ Asthmatic Kitty label.
