An office meeting might not seem like the time nor place to harmonize about strawberry champagne, silk sheets and Cadillac drives. But a cappella cover group Straight No Chaser makes it work (no pun intended) in the cheeky new video for their rendition of Bruno Mars‘ hit “That’s What I Like.”
The visual, premiering here on Billboard today (June 20), follows the all-male group through an office building as they win — and lose — a coworker’s affection. And while the playful video offers an unexpected twist on the chart-topping track’s glamorous themes, the cover itself was an obvious choice for member Walter Chase.
“After seeing [Bruno Mars] perform this song at the Grammys, I knew it was going to be a massive hit not only for Bruno, but in the Straight No Chaser repertoire,” Chase tells Billboard. “The video’s playful concept shows how we don’t take ourselves too seriously, while also allowing us to groove to a song we all enjoy.”
But the professionals are no joke. Since forming as a campus organization at Indiana University and mastering their sound through several holiday albums, the group took on pop in a series of six-track cover EPs, the third of which — Six Pack: Volume 3 — drops July 21.
For now, the group is gearing up to join Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox in a 25-city co-headline summer tour. But come fall, Straight No Chaser will kick off their own Speakeasy Tour, which hits 41 cities and runs into 2018.
