Sting has been selected as the MusiCares Person of the Year. Presented by the Recording Academy, the award acknowledges the artist’s accomplishments as a musician, humanitarian and environmental activist.
The honor will be bestowed on the former Police lead singer at the 14th annual gala tribute to benefit the MusiCares Foundation’s financial assistance program, set for Feb. 6 in Los Angeles. The event is part of Grammy Fest, a week of activities leading up to the 46th annual Grammy Awards, set for Feb. 8 at L.A.’s Staples Center.
“Sting is a living symbol for what we as a society should strive to celebrate: a one-of-a-kind creative talent with a heart to match,” Recording Academy/MusiCares Foundation president Neil Portnow says. “His capacity for compassion is limitless, as is his generosity of spirit.”
“Sacred Love,” Sting latest A&M album, is No. 6 in its second week on The Billboard 200. As previously reported, the artist will be the recipient of Billboard’s Century Award, to be presented Dec. 10 at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas, which will air live on Fox.
Established in 1989 by the Recording Academy, MusiCares provides assistance for members of the music community in times of need. Proceeds from the annual Person of the Year gala, which features a silent auction and a concert tribute to the honoree, raises funds for the foundation. Past recipients include U2 lead singer Bono, Billy Joel and Elton John.
