Everyone and their mom is a dance music producer in 2018 — and that’s not just an expression. Steve Aoki is one of the fun-lovingest gentlemen in dance, hip-hop and pop, and he’s crossing over to the family game by putting his adorable mother on a track.
“Moshi Moshi” is a spitfire tune with hard synths and psychedelic textures, but it’s also equally kawaii, which is Japanese for cute, in case you’re not a Japanophile. Those ballsy moments may have been influenced by psy trance collaborators Vini Vici, but all the face-pinching parts come courtesy of Mama Aoki. And the ringing phone? Well, in Japan, when you answer a phone, you say “Moshi Moshi,” hence the title of the track.
Aoki has been on a very energetic level lately, returning wholeheartedly to the dance floor with recent singles “Anthem,” featuring Hardwell and Kris Kiss, and “It’s Time” with Laidback Luke. “Moshi Moshi” is right there on the rainbow spectrum, to be sure. It’s out now on Dim Mak. Check it out below.
