How well do you know Steve Aoki? You may realize his father is Hiroaki “Rocky” Aoki was the Japanese-American who founded Benihana, but did you know he was an Olympic-qualifying wrestler? You may remember he got his start in the music business throwing DIY punk shows in his living room, but did you know he was then a hardcore vegan hellbent on defying his father’s capitalism practices? We all know he runs the indie label Dim Mak, but do you recall how it’s place as an aught-rock great helping break Bloc Party, Fischerspooner and The Von Bondies?
These fun facts are but scratches on the surface of Aoki’s tale. His is truly a life well lived, and obviously, some things have changed, and the Neon Future producer and international DJ is ready to cut past the icing on every detail of his life — yes, even the cake throwing. Aoki is releasing an autobiography.
“I’m proud to announce that I will be releasing my first memoir BLUE: The Color of Noise this September,” Aoki tells Billboard Dance. “The title is a direct reflection of how I started out creating noise that people wanted to listen to, which led to a career in making cross genre music for my fans all over the world with a universal language. The memoir gives people a glimpse into my life for an outsider looking in, recounting my upbringing, the highs and lows, life events and people along the way that got me to where I am today. I poured my heart and soul into this book and am so excited to share it with the world.”
BLUE: The Color of Noise will tell of his world travels, his highs as a success, his lows losing friends to drugs, the harsh realities of life in the spotlight, the importance of giving back, and more. Of course, he’s collaborated with everyone from Lil Yachty to MSTRKRFT to Blink 182, so expect some cameos. Rare photos will be published inside its pages, too.
The full memoir is set for release Tuesday, Sept. 3, on St. Martin’s Press. Pre-order it today.
