In May, news surfaced that DJ/producer Steve Aoki was being sued by a fan who claimed that his stage antics — specifically the Hard Rock Cafe show Brittany Hickman attended in 2012 — caused her to break her neck and nearly be paralyzed.
On Thursday (Aug. 18), the jury reached a 10-2 verdict in favor of Hard Rock Cafe following a two-week trial. Aoki was cleared of liability after reportedly reaching a confidential settlement outside of court with Hickman before the trial began.
Hickman filed her $10.7 million lawsuit against Aoki and the Hard Rock Cafe after the two parties refused to pay her medical bills and two-month disability period that prevented her from working. Lawyers defending Aoki and Hard Rock argued those who attend Aoki’s shows should be aware he often performs similar stunts at his live shows.
Billboard Dance reached out to Aoki’s rep, who provided the following statement: “Steve would never want anyone to get hurt at one of his shows and is sorry Ms. Hickman did. After they reached a confidential settlement, they had the chance to speak, and Steve got the chance to apologize. The favorable verdict for his co-defendant, Hard Rock Hotel, brings welcome closure to all parties.”
