Steve Aoki is one of the many electro-dance stars invading Miami this weekend for the 2014 Ultra Music Festival, but the veteran producer and founder of Dim Mak Records is preparing an ambitious double-album that will set him apart from his peers. Watch Aoki discuss the project, along with moving from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, with Billboard’s Kerri Mason at the Red Bull Guest House below:
Aoki says that his forthcoming project, titled “Neon Future,” will be released in two halves, with the first half featuring artists like Fall Out Boy, Empire of the Sun and Waka Flocka Flame. “It’s two albums, and the first part is coming out in August, and the second part is coming out in 2015,” says Aoki, who describes Part 2 as “deeper” than the first installment.
In the meantime, Aoki is enjoying the success of Dim Mak artists the Chainsmokers, who have recently dazzled the dance circuit with their satirical single “#Selfie.” The song has cracked the Top 20 of the Hot 100 chart and landed the EDM duo a prime performance slot at Ultra Fest this year.
“It’s amazing to see a record that doesn’t have a big vocal — that has no real vocal, it’s just banter,” says Aoki, of “#Selfie.” “It’s a stab on what’s happening now in culture… It’s just a real clever move.”
