Celebrating her first. No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 while quarantined wasn’t what Doja Cat had in mind when the time came. But social distancing has benefited The 1975 frontman Matty Healy as he curates his own world as opposed to curating the world around him ahead of the band’s album Notes on a Conditional Form.
During Billboard social media takeovers, video interviews and feature stories, artists from Christina Aguilera to Tiana Major9 embarked on tours of their backyards and kitchens to show us what they’ve been cooking up during quarantine. Plus, they let us know how dropping new music in a time like this works.

“Fun fact: Summer has been practicing her high notes during quarantine. Next-generation diva in the making! …the dogs are dying!”
“It’s a weird moment, but I have a lot of things that make my situation more fortunate than most people. I’m in L.A. with my family, in my childhood home and in my childhood room, which is always fun. I spend most of my time doing Zoom writing sessions, writing on my own at the piano, running around my block, watching RuPaul’s Drag Race, eating. Trying to keep calm, and enjoying being with my family, since I’m usually in New York. There’s some puppies and babies around too, which always makes everyone feel better.”
“I was in the U.K. for about four and a half weeks, in total isolation. Then I realized that actually, because I’m Finnish and I have a house in Finland, that I could actually go to Finland. Having been physically recovered from the corona thing for a week and a half, I just bought myself a flight and came to Finland. I’ve been here in total nature continuing the healing — having dips in the freezing cold lake and going into the sauna.”
“In the past, most of my inspiration comes from collaborating with other people and just being out so it’s definitely challenged me to draw inspiration from other things. I also think about collaborations in a different way because I can’t physically get together with many people to play music. It’s also made me focus on the people that I can play music with. So, on Friday, we’re going to be reconfiguring my household situations to be able to play with my partner, and I’ll see what kind of sound we can get with our instruments. I have to be more innovative and flexible.”
“I got some pirate gear and I put it on. And then I got surprised. My manager called me and was like, ‘Come outside.’ And I’m like, ‘Godda–, I was doing something way more fun!’ And then I walked outside, and everyone’s in the driveway. My mom, my manager, everybody. And they’re blasting my music. And I’m just like sweating in fear of the neighbors. Some kid walked out. Yeah, it was wild, It was really cute and really sweet.”
“I love cooking. You know that I’m always in the kitchen, always making something. So I’m grateful that I have enough time to work on recipes and nourish my body and really take care.”
“We all have a little bit more time on our hands, so I’ve learned things that I’ve wanted to do for a long time but always put off, like maybe a new music software. Or I learned how to give a haircut to my girlfriend and it really wasn’t terrible, so that’s kinda cool.”
“I’m not literally scared of going outside. I just feel that now, I’m more conscious of like… the cultivation of my own world, as opposed to the constant desire to curate the wider world. You know, politics starts at home, and it’s not that I don’t stand for the same ideas at home that I do in public, it’s just that I feel like I spend a lot of my time trying to change the world. And maybe I should change more time trying to change my world, and trying to curate my world, maintain my relationships, that kind of thing.”
“I’m doing good! You know, quarantine is so weird because I’m not used to having all this time at home, or not, like, actually going out to work. So doing a lot of my work from home is very, very weird, but it’s allowed me to put my energy in other areas of my creativity than I would usually get as much time to do. You know, sometimes I have so much stuff that I do that the schedules end up fighting each other and canceling one out. So now, one is canceled out for other reasons so….”
