A well-placed Spotify source has confirmed that indeed the music streaming service will arrive in Brazil sometime this year.
In addition to posting a strategic partnership manager career opportunity in Sao Paulo, the music streaming service invited press to an unspecified event in the same city on May 28. Though Spotify representatives dismissed talk of a launch as “just rumors at this point,” it is suspected that the press conference will unveil the launch.
MusicWeek originally broke the story.
Right now, the service is available in Brazil as an invite-only trial version. The country’s dominant streaming platforms are Muve Music (via its partnership with Brazilian mobile carrier TIM), Rdio, and Deezer, which recently replaced an existing integration of Spotify in Shazam’s app, where Spotify has been removed as an option to stream a song in that area (Rdio also has a deal with Shazam allowing songs identified by Shazam to be automatically added to an Rdio playlist once users connect their accounts with the two services).
Spotify originally posted job positions in South American markets (of which Brazil is the largest, ranking 8th in the world) last year, but its entry was reportedly delayed due to prolonged discussions with record labels there as well as tax and legal issues.
