Sweden-based music streaming service Spotify has confirmed it has plans to expand into the Netherlands during 2010.
During a digital music business panel at European music conference and festival Eurosonic (Jan. 15), the company’s global head of licensing, Niklas Ivarsson, said discussions were underway with organizations such as Netherlands’ licensing body Buma Stemra to broaden Spotify’s scope to Holland.
Spotify offers free ad-funded streaming alongside premium subscription packages including access via mobile.
“The Netherlands is a very interesting country with strong advertising opportunities,” he said. “We will be [in the Netherlands] in 2010 but I cannot commit to a fixed date. Holland is on the priority list.”
He added, “When we go live [in a new territory], we are focused on doing that country correctly, with an entire office including advertising managers and support teams. It takes time to finalize the discussions that make this happen but it’s all going well.”
Spotify is currently live in six countries: Sweden, the U.K., France, Finland, Norway and Spain. As previously announced, founder and CEO Daniel Ek confirmed he is planning a U.S. launch in the first half of 2010 (Billboard.biz, Nov. 20). It first launched in Sweden in October 2008 and now claims to have over six million users.
Today’s Eurosonic conference, held in Groningen, also featured a keynote by Steve Knopper, author of “Appetite for Destruction: the Spectacular Crash of the Record Industry in the Digital Age” and contributing editor for Rolling Stone; panels on the European festival circuit and the role of an agent; and a ceremony for the winners of the European music interactive awards.
