Streaming services won’t be feeling the Adele effect like the rest of the world when she drops her third album, 25, this Friday.
The New York Times reported that 25 won’t pop up on Apple Music, Spotify or any major streaming services on opening day. In response, Spotify has issued the following statement.
“We love and respect Adele, as do her 24 million fans on Spotify. We hope that she will give those fans the opportunity to enjoy 25 on Spotify alongside 19 and 21 very soon.”
Taylor Swift pulled a similar yet more extreme maneuver when the pop titan pulled her catalog from Spotify last year after taking issue with unpaid royalties from the streaming service.
Withholding 25 from streaming sites could also mean explosive first-week sales for Adele. The British siren is expected to shatter *NSYNC’s historic first-week sales week record (in 2000, their No Strings Attached album shipped 4.2 million units) as her label Columbia Records will be shipping 3.6 million copies of the album in the U.S.
