Spoon is about “halfway through” work on its next studio album, which is being penciled in for an April or May release. “We’ve been recording off and on for the past year, but in the past six weeks we’ve been recording every day,” frontman Britt Daniel tells Billboard.com. “This is the serious recording stretch where we’ll get most of it done. We’ve got six songs started, but we work slow.”
Among the first two tracks to be worked up are “Don’t Make Me a Target” and “Rhythm and Soul,” which have been frequently played live over the past year. As for what musical direction the new material is taking, Daniel admits, “It’s hard for me to say. I can’t really see the big picture yet.”
“I feel like we just have a bunch of songs, but our producer, who is usually pretty hard on us, says it’s quite different from stuff we’ve done before. I can’t see it at this point,” he adds with a laugh.
Daniel says he hopes to be finished in the studio by the end of November (“It depends on how many dinner breaks we take, probably,” he notes). To help reach that goal, Spoon is only playing one show before the end of the year, a mini-festival on Dec. 1 in Austin alongside Peaches, Dead Meadow and the Octopus Project.
“We’ve pretty much decided to lay low until we get this thing done, because shows usually set us back,” he admits. The new album is the follow-up to last year’s “Gimme Fiction,” which has sold 146,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
As reported yesterday, a new Spoon song and several instrumentals Daniel penned with composer Brian Reitzell can be found on the soundtrack for “Stranger Than Fiction,” due Nov. 7 via Columbia.
