Matt Medved has been named Spin‘s editor-in-chief, parent company Valence Media announced on Thursday (Dec. 20).
Spin is owned by the Billboard-Hollywood Reporter Media Group division of Valence Media.
“Matt has proven to be a great storyteller, journalist and industry liaison, we’re excited to have him at the helm of Spin,” said Deanna Brown, Valence Media managing director.
Medved joins Spin from Billboard, where he has worked since 2015 when he joined as senior editor, dance/electronic. In June 2017, Medved was promoted to director, dance/electronic programming & cross-department content strategy.
In Medved’s most recent position, he oversaw all of Billboard‘s dance and electronic coverage and content programming, increasing Billboard Dance‘s audience more than eightfold and consulting on cross-genre verticals, including Billboard Latin, Billboard Hip-Hop and Billboard Pride.
He also launched the Billboard Dance 100 artist rankings earlier this year, garnering more than 180,000 votes from 174 countries, and has helped grow Billboard Dance‘s social media footprint to nearly 700,000 followers.
Prior to joining Billboard, Medved worked as a consultant for global conflict resolution NGO Search for Common Ground, conducting human rights field research in Nigeria and writing grants to the Department of State and USAID. The Rochester, New York, native graduated from Northwestern University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and earned Juris Doctor and Master of Arts in International Affairs degrees from The George Washington University.
In this new role, Medved fills a position vacated by Puja Patel, who joined Pitchfork as editor-in-chief in September.
“I am honored to be joining Spin as editor-in-chief,” says Medved. “As an avid reader from an early age, Spin was the publication that inspired me to enter journalism. I have always respected its fearless reporting, irreverent writing and cross-disciplinary curation. We have a unique opportunity to revitalize Spin‘s voice for a new generation by leveraging today’s digital platforms with an eye towards innovative storytelling and emerging artists and styles. I’m excited to lead this iconic brand into a new era and build upon its three-decade legacy.”
