Spike Lee couldn’t have made Malcolm X without him. Questlove learned how to remix from him. And all Kimbra really remembers about accepting her Grammy is that he was standing right beside her. On Friday they were joined by several other entertainment world luminaries at New York University to share these stories and many, many more about Prince, who passed away on April 21 at age 57.
In this video shot exclusively by Billboard, singer Anthony Hamilton and music journalists/Prince experts Toure, Alan Light and Carol Cooper joined Lee, Questlove and Kimbra to share personal stories of how Prince changed their lives and the greater culture as a whole. Led by Jason King, an associate professor and director of NYU’s The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, and hosted before a tiny group of NYU students seated eagerly at their feet, this moving and insightful discussion reveals just how deep Prince’s legacy cut.
