Spike TV is taking a page from James Corden’s wildly popular Carpool Karaoke.
The Viacom-owned cable network — home to hit Lip Sync Battle — has greenlit Caraoke Showdown, hosted by Craig Robinson.
Set to debut as a half-hour special later this year, Caraoke Showdown will feature The Office alum Robinson picking up unsuspecting contestants who realize they are on a karaoke-inspired game show. During various rounds of game play, contestants must belt out their favorite tunes, finish the lyrics or act out songs for cash. Celebrity guest appearances will add surprise as the contestants never know what to expect next.
Caraoke hails from Howie Mandel’s Alevy Productions. The company’s Mike Marks will exec produce along with Core Media.
Caraoke Showdown is considered a one-off special but it’s a safe bet that if successful, it will become a series.
Spike exec vp original series Sharon Levy and senior vp originals Chachi Senior will executive produce; Tori Socha will oversee production.
For Spike TV, Caraoke comes as the cable network has found massive success with Jimmy Fallon’s Lip Sync Battle. The reality competition series, based on the regular Tonight Show sketch, features celebrities dueling it out in elaborately staged lip syncperformances. Hosted by LL Cool J, the multi-platform hit ranks as Spike’s most-watched original series in history. Season two premiered Jan. 7 and, after its first two episodes, is averaging 4.4 million total viewers and an impressive 3.1 in the adults 18-49 demographic.
On the digital front, its weekly clips continue to go viral on a regular basis. The series has amassed more than 500 million video streams since its launch last April, with more than 50 million alone for the season two premiere featuring Channing Tatum squaring off against his wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, with special appearances by Beyonce and Paula Abdul. The series has already been renewed for a third season.
Spike’s Caraoke comes as James Cordon’s coroporate sibling The Late Late Show has found success online with viral segment Carpool Karaoke.
Robinson, repped by UTA and 3 Arts, recently won the Sundance Actor Award for his role in Morris From America. His credits include NBC’s Mr. Robinson, Hot Tub Time Machine and This Is the End.
