Rock act Sparta has set an Oct. 10 release date for its third studio album and debut for Hollywood Records, “Threes.” First single “Taking Back Control,” which finds frontman Jim Ward sharing vocals with new member Keeley Davis, can be streamed from the group’s Myspace.com page.
The 12-track set closes with “Translations,” which features backing vocals from Merry Clayton, who is best known for her work on the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.”
Sparta has also created a short film, “Eme Nakia,” to accompany “Threes.” The movie was inspired by drummer Tony Hajjar’s childhood in Beirut and his family’s subsequent move to El Paso, Texas.
The new material will receive its live debut on a short run of tour dates, beginning July 29 in Los Angeles and also including an Aug. 6 appearance at Lollapalooza in Chicago.
In related news, Ward has pacted with Doghouse Records to distribute releases from his Civil Defense League label, Billboard.com has learned. The first project, due in the fall, is “How Will We Know We Are Dead?,” featuring poet Bobby Byrd reading his work atop Ward’s backing.
Also in the works is an album from Reflections, led by former Rhythm Of Black Lines guitarist/vocalist Clint Newsom.
