New York-based RED Distribution is expected to announce today (March 9) that it has reached an agreement with Megaforce Records Inc., sources tell Billboard.biz. Megaforce was started about 22 years ago as a hard rock label, and has grown today into an independent label group with more than 25 imprints.
The label continues to release metal and rock albums under the Megaforce name, as well as through its alt-rock imprint Transdreamer. During the last nine years, however, Megaforce has been actively rebuilding itself as a label group.
Among its distributed labels are blues imprint Fat Possum, indie rock label Sonic Boom Recordings, the eclectic Ropeadope and a number of artist-run labels, including those by String Cheese Incident, Steve Winwood, Michelle Shocked, Burning Spear and the Yonder Mountain String Band.
Megaforce has been with Ryko Distribution since 1999.
Representatives from RED and Megaforce declined to comment.
