Nineties Seattle rock megastars Soundgarden reconvened at its hometown’s Showbox at the Market club Friday night (April 16) to play its first show exactly 13 years and seven days since its 1997 break up.
After a ticket scavenger hunt on Twitter @Soundgarden and figuring out that the quartet was playing under the name Nude Dragons (an anagram), the thousand fans who made it into the intimate Seattle club were treated to a roughly 90-minute set that included plenty of the band’s classic hits (1991’s “Rusty Cage,” 1994’s “Fell On Black Days”), fan favorites (1987’s “Nothing To Say”), and even a cover (The Doors’ “Waiting For The Sun”).
Reportedly among the crowd to witness the live reunion were a number of other Seattle music heavyweights, including Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron’s current Pearl Jam bandmate Stone Gossard, Mudhoney‘s Mark Arm, the Fastbacks‘ Kurt Bloch, Mother Love Bone‘s Bruce Fairweather, and Sub Pop Records co-founder Jonathan Poneman, according to Seattle Post-Intellegencer blogger Travis Hay.
The 18-song set represented every era of Soundgarden’s 12-year run, a good indication that concert goers who catch them at Lollapalooza this summer and other to-be-announced shows this year will hear tracks from the band’s whole career. Flanked by Cameron, guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Ben Shepherd, frontman Chris Cornell even said onstage at the Showbox that the band intended to dig up rarely played pre-nineties gems for their future gigs.
As Billboard previously reported, no other dates have been announced for Soundgarden, who confirmed a reunion on January 1. The group is expected to plan activity around Cameron’s previously confirmed schedule with Pearl Jam, which includes short North American and European tours through July.
There’s no word yet if the band is planning to record new material. But today (April 17) as part of National Record Store Day, Soundgarden has re-released its first 7-inch vinyl single, “Hunted Down” b/w “Nothing To Say,” which originally came out in 1987 on Sub Pop.
