Seventeen-year-old rapper/producer Soulja Boy races to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his debut single, “Crank That (Soulja Boy).” The track jumps from No. 2 thanks to sales of 144,000 digital downloads and Aug. 27 performances by Soulja Boy of the song and its signature dance on MTV’s “TRL” and BET’s “106 & Park.”
Kanye West’s Daft Punk-sampling “Stronger” rises 3-2 as the fastest growing track at radio, while last week’s No. 1, Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” slides to No. 3. Interscope thus becomes the first label since the Island Def Jam Music Group in September 2005 to post back-to-back Hot 100 chart-toppers.
Elsewhere, Timbaland’s “The Way I Are” featuring Keri Hilson holds at No. 4, and Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls” remains at No. 5. T-Pain’s “Bartender” featuring Akon rebounds 7-6, Nickleback’s “Rock Star” jumps 11-8 and Fabolous’ “Make Me Better” featuring Ne-Yo stands pat at No. 9. Plies’ “Shawty” featuring T-Pain slides 9-10 to round out the top tier.
With the third biggest jump of 2007, Carrie Underwood’s “So Small” rockets 93-17 in its third week on the Hot 100, after selling 71,000 digital downloads. The chart’s top debut comes from Nelly at No. 43 with “Wadsyaname.” It’s a career-best opening position for the rapper fond of creative spelling, who has four No. 1s and 12 top 10s to his credit.
Also new this week is Garth Brooks’ “More Than a Memory” at No. 73, the first single from his Nov. 6 release “Ultimate Hits.” On Hot Country Songs, the track debuts at No. 1, a first in chart history. Kenny Chesney last week tied a 43-year-old mark held by the late Buck Owens by debuting at No. 16 on the chart with “Don’t Blink.”
On Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, Keyshia Cole’s “Let It Go” featuring Missy Elliott and Lil’ Kim is No. 1 for a third week. Alicia Keys’ “No One” is the fastest growing track at radio, rocketing 65-21 in its second week on the chart.
Enrique Iglesias’ “Dimelo” is back at No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs, dethroning Gloria Estefan’s “No Llores” after one week at the top. Los Rieleros, in the midst of a U.S. tour and just finishing TV appearances in Miami, zoom to No. 5 with 68% gain in audience impressions, resulting in their second-highest rank to date with “Un Juego.”
There’s no change on Billboard’s rock charts, with Foo Fighters’ “The Pretender” leading Modern Rock for a third week and Three Days Grace’s “Never Too Late” No. 1 on Mainstream Rock for a fifth.
