Michael Caplan, who left Or Music to rejoin Sony BMG Music Entertainment in a senior A&R capicity (Billboard, Dec. 17), has been named senior VP of A&R for the Sony Music Label Group. As part of his responsibilities, Caplan will also be president of his own customer label, NuHaven Music, an imprint that will be headquartered at RED’s offices.
Titles from the imprint may be distributed through either RED and Sony BMG Music Entertainment Sales, apparently depending on the project.
Caplan, who will report to Don Ienner, CEO of the Sony Music Label Group, most recently co-founded Or, where he signed Los Lonely Boys and Matisyahu. Larry Miller — the other Or co-founder — is carrying on Or Music which has been renamed Or Media Group.
Prior to Or Music, Caplan had been a Sony Music A&R executive for nearly 20 years, signing and developing such artists as Ginuwine, Living Colour, the Bad Brains, the Godfathers, and Peter Himmelman. He also revived the prestigious OKeh label, where he signed and developed contemporary blues artists including G. Love & Special Sauce, Keb’ Mo’, Alvin ‘Youngblood’ Hart, Little Axe, and Popa Chubby.
