Two of Latin music’s biggest stars and most highly regarded contemporary Latin singer/songwriters, Marco Antonio Solis and Juan Luis Guerra, will receive special honors at the 2005 Billboard Latin Music Awards.
Solis, whose most recent album, “Razon de Sobra,” debuted last fall at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart, will receive the Billboard Lifetime Achievement Award, given by Billboard for an outstanding career and artistic achievements. As previously reported, the artist is the top finalist for the Billboard Latin Music Awards, competing in eight categories.
Meanwhile, Guerra will be honored with the Spirit of Hope Award for his work with his Juan Luis Guerra and 4.40 Foundation in his native Dominican Republic. Guerra is also a multiple finalist for the awards, vying for three prizes for his album “Para Ti” and the single “Las Avispas.”
Both are slated to attend the 16th edition of the Billboard Latin Music Awards, which will air live April 28 on Telemundo from the Miami Arena.
While finalists and eventual winners of the Billboard Latin Music Awards are determined by performance on the Billboard charts, winners of the Lifetime Achievement and Spirit of Hope Awards are chosen by an editorial committee based solely on merit specific to that award.
Previous recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award include Los Lobos and Mongo Santamaria, while Spirit of Hope Award recipients include Mana, Ricky Martin, and Olga Tanon.
In related news, Puerto Rican vocalist Chayanne will sit for a special Q&A the day before the awards as part of the Billboard Latin Music Conference. The artist will on March 29 release “Desde Siempre,” a new compilation of romantic hits.
