Supports of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe rejoined on Sunday when it was announced that the Army Corps of Engineers will look for an alternate route for the Dakota Access Pipeline. Among those celebrating were Chance the Rapper, Solange, Mark Ruffalo, Common, the Wu-Tang Clan and many others. Following months of protests and recent clashes between the hundreds of protesters and security forces, the news was met with jubilation that the oil pipeline — with protesters said could damage the nearby reservation’s waters supply and cross sacred lands — may not go forward; the companies behind hte project, Energy Transfer Partners and Sunoco Logistics Partners, said they will forge ahead with the plan, according to CNN.
The movement against the oil pipeline gained scores of celebrity supporters over the past few months, with letters to the White House from Neil Young and a coalition of more than 100 artists arriving in the last week. With Sunday’s (Dec. 4) announcement, Chance declared the defenders of Standing Rock “American heroes,” while Alicia Keys said, “victory for us all!!!”
