For the third time in its career and the second this year, System Of A Down scores the top position on The Billboard 200. “Hypnotize” (American/Columbia) debuts at No. 1 on the album chart with sales of more than 320,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. [Ed Note: This number has been revised from an earlier version of this story.]
Although it was enough to debut in the lead, the first-week total for “Hypnotize” came up shy of the 453,000 copies the rock act’s “Mezmerize” moved in its first week back in May. SOAD previously reached No. 1 with “Toxicity” in 2001.
Overall sales for the week, which included the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday and “Black Friday,” the unofficial kickoff of the holiday shopping season, were up 30% over the previous week at 17 million units, but still 10% behind the same week a year ago. Sales for 2005 lag behind 2004 by about 13% at 509 million units.
Kenny Chesney’s “The Road and the Radio” (BNA) remains in the top five in its third week, rebounding 3-2 on sales of 300,000, up 58%. “The Road…” debuted at No. 1 three weeks ago and has since sold nearly 966,000 copies.
Up from No. 5, the 20th installment of the “NOW! That’s What I Call Music” (Sony BMG/Zomba/EMI/UME) compiliation comes in a close third with 290,000, an increase of 70%. A 40% drop to 210,000 sends Madonna’s “Confessions on a Dance Floor” (Warner Bros.) tumbling 1-4. Meanwhile, the 50 Cent-led soundtrack to “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” (G-Unit/Interscope) advances 6-5 on a 23% spike to 207,000.
Mariah Carey’s “The Emancipation of Mimi” (Island) dips 4-6 in its 33rd week on The Billboard 200 thanks to a 10% drop to sales of 204,000 copies. “Some Hearts,” the debut Arista album from reigning “American Idol” Carrie Underwood, slides 2-7 on a 40% loss to 187,000.
Ethereal Irish artist Enya’s newest Warner Bros. release, “Amarantine,” sold 178,000 to debut at No. 8. It’s the former Clannad member’s third solo album to break the top 10.
Also bowing in the top tier is Juelz Santana’s “What the Game’s Been Missing” (Diplomats) at No. 9 and Chamillionaire’s “The Sound of Revenge” (Universal) at No. 10, with sales of 141,000 and 130,000 copies, respectively.
Reba McEntire’s MCA Nashville hits compilation “Reba: #1’s” opens at No. 12, while former Creed frontman Scott Stapp’s solo debut, “The Great Divide,” enters the chart at No. 19. Other top 50 debuts came from Nelly’s “Sweatsuit” (Universal, No. 26), John Mayer Trio’s “Try!: Live in Concert” (Aware/Columbia, No. 34) and the compilation “Big Boi Presents… Got Purp?” (Purple Ribbon/Virgin, No. 49).
