Presley Scott Harwell, the infant son of Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell and Michelle Laroque, died Saturday of complications from acute lymphocytic leukemia, according to the band’s tour manager. The modern rock group has canceled immediate tour dates in the wake of the child’s death.
The child, born Jan. 26, became ill Thursday, tour manager Scotty Haulter said. The San Jose, Calif.-based group was in Minot, N.D., when members learned that Harwell’s son was critically ill at Sunrise Children’s Hospital in Las Vegas. Presley died early Saturday morning.
Last night’s (July 30) performance in Great Falls, Mont., and tonight’s appearance in Kellogg, Idaho, were canceled. The group did not know when it would resume its schedule.
“They’re taking it one day at a time,” according to a representative for Interscope, the band’s label. “They were mainly scheduled to do radio shows and summer fair-type appearances.” Other dates on the band’s schedule include an appearance Saturday in Sturgis, S.D. at the Legendary Buffalo Chip, Monday at the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Empire Fair, and Aug. 25 at WFLZ’s the Big One concert at the Ice Palace in Tampa, Fla., along with Jessica Simpson, Eden’s Crush, Willa Ford, and Kaci.
A memorial service is scheduled for today in Las Vegas, where Harwell lives. Presley Harwell was an only child.Copyright 2001 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
