Here’s a bummer to start your week: indie-pop starlet Sky Ferreira and DIIV frontman Zachary Cole Smith were reportedly arrested early Saturday morning (Sept. 14) in New York for misdemeanor charges stemming from criminal possession of controlled substances.
According to the Daily Freeman (via Pitchfork), Smith and Ferreira were arrested after being stopped for a traffic stop in the village. A registration check showed that the couple’s Ford pickup truck had stolen license plates, and that officers found a “plastic bag containing 42 decks of heroin” in the vehicle.
Smith, 28, was also charged with “one count of possession of stolen property and one count of aggravated unlicensed driving,” as well as multiple violations stemming from an unregistered motor vehicle. Ferreira, 21, was found in possession of Ecstasy, and resisted arrest. Both were taken to Ulster County jail and released on bail following the arrest.
DIIV performed on Saturday night in Hudson, N.Y. at the BasilicaSoundScape festival, while Ferreira is expected to kick off an opening spot on Vampire Weekend’s fall tour on Thursday (Sept. 19) in Philadelphia. Her debut album, “Night Time, My Time,” was officially announced on Friday morning — less than 24 hours before the arrest — after years of delays.
“I’m not a saint, but I’m also 21 years old,” Ferreira told Billboard in July backstage at the Pitchfork Music Festival, when asked about her perceived association with drug culture. “Yeah, I do go out, but I’m not a drug addict by any means, because you can’t do this [performing] if you’re a drug addict. If I was a drug addict, there would already be a ton of shit out there showing that I was a drug addict, you know? I would be behaving like one. I think it’s partially who I hang out with, the way I look and the way I dress.”
