The Supreme Court struck down Louisiana’s abortion law on Monday (June 29) that would’ve nearly shut down every clinic in the state in a 5-4 ruling, with Chief Justice John Roberts siding with liberal justices in the final vote.
Louisiana’s law, which sounds eerily similar to the one blocked in Texas four years ago, banned doctors from performing the procedure unless they had admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. Roberts used the doctrine of stare decisis to come to his decision, which allows the court to stand by its precedents like the 2016 ruling in Texas.
Stars from Sara Bareilles to Barbra Streisand sounded off on Twitter about the ruling, with Streisand calling out conservative Justice Brett Kavanaugh for telling “Senator Collins that he would respect precedence about a woman’s right to choose.”
“He was lying,” she wrote.
