Simon Cowell is among the signatories on a letter to parliamentarians urging them to vote in favor of the U.K. government’s Digital Economy Bill.
Cowell rarely gets involved in such public policy matters, though he has sought government support (to waive VAT sales tax) for the various charity singles he has organized.
The Digital Economy Bill includes measures to oblige ISPs to write letters to subscribers suspected of infringing copyright, and there would be an option to suspend Internet access if there was no overall reduction in the levels of illegal file-sharing.
The other signatories are author Terry Pratchett, co-chairman of Working Title Films Tim Bevan, TV producer Stephen Garrett and British director Paul Greengrass.
