Massachusetts-based folk label Signature Sounds is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an 18-song compilation featuring rarities and previously unreleased goodies from its past two decades.
Signature Sounds 20th Anniversary Collection: Rarities From The Second Decade — featuring artists like Lake Street Dive, Eilen Jewell and Chris Smither — drops March 3, but Billboard presents an exclusive first listen below.
Here’s what label president and co-founder Jim Olsen had to say to Billboard about the anniversary:
In the last decade Signature Sounds has been one of the most prolific roots music labels in America. With over 80 releases from 29 different artists, there was bound to be some tasty leftovers. It was only when we started combing our archives for this collection did we realize what rich bounty it would be. The Signature Sounds 20th Anniversary Collection is both a satisfying listen for fans of the label, and also a perfect introduction for newcomers. It’s been an honor to be a part of the Americana and folk music communities for 20 years. Thank you to the many incredible Signature Sounds artists as they’ve evolved, sometimes collaborating with one another, and made such wonderful music.
Signature Sounds has released over 150 albums since forming in 1994. In addition to putting out music, it also produces the Green River Festival (set for July 10-12) and launched a Northampton, Mass. venue called The Parlor Room.
