The music of legendary bluesman John Lee Hooker will be released on a 4-CD box set Oct. 31 via Shout! Factory. “Hooker” will cull material from all eras of the artist’s 50-year career, from a 1948 recording of “Boogie Chillen” to a version of the same song recorded in 1998 with Eric Clapton.
As previously reported, the Hooker estate, which is controlled by daughter Zaklya Hooker, recently licensed five of his best-selling albums from the ’80s and ’90s to Shout! Factory. Half of the material on the box set will come from those albums, while the other half will be licensed from current rights holders, including EMI, Fantasy and Vee-Jay.
“Hooker” includes performances with Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt and Carlos Santana, among others, plus early tracks Hooker recorded under such names as Texas Slim and Johnny Williams. Music journalist Ted Drozdowski will contribute comprehensive liner notes about Hooker’s influences and career, with additional notes provided by Van Morrison, Santana and Fito de la Parra.
