The eighty-six nominees for the 2003 Shortlist Music Prize have been unveiled as a precursor to selecting 10 finalists early next month and choosing a winner Oct. 16 in Los Angeles. As previously reported, the award ceremony will include a multi-artist concert at the Wiltern Theatre. Plans are afoot to broadcast the show on a cable network to be announced.
The nominees are selected by 20 “listmakers,” each of whom chooses albums released between July 1, 2002, and June 30, 2003. Albums are ineligible if they have sold more than 500,000 copies in the U.S. Among this year’s 20 listmakers are Dave Matthews, Tori Amos, Tom Waits, Cameron Crowe and Erykah Badu.
The long list of nominees offers the expected wide range of sounds and styles, from the moody New York rock of Interpol, Longwave and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to the worldly sounds of Orchestra Baobab, Luciana Souza and Ibraham Ferrer. Other notable selections include albums from Radiohead, Beck, Pete Yorn, Royksopp, the Black Keys, Common, Ms. Dynamite and Nick Cave.
“With over 45 different labels represented, and half the nominees signed to independent companies, this year’s Long List shows a vibrant and prolific creative community,” Shortlist co-founder Tom Sarig said in a statement.
