In a very meta episode that revolved around a drug dubbed “K-pop,” FOX’s Lucifer surprised viewers last night (Jan. 29) with the inclusion of SHINee’s song by the same name.
“Lucifer,” the Korean boy band’s 2010 electro-pop hit known in particular for its dynamic dance formations, played during a scene of the television show where the titular satanic character ends up in a Korean-owned Karaoke parlor to fight gang members without his supernatural abilities.
The DC Comics-based fantasy series has featured K-pop in the past, including songs by CL and BIGBANG’s T.O.P, but this is the first time Lucifer has used the iconic SHINee song as an on-air Easter egg.
The song’s airplay on American television came at a bittersweet time for SHINee fans, who are still in mourning over the loss of member Jonghyun, who passed away in December. His posthumous album Poet | Artist debuted on the Feb. 3 Billboard 200 chart at No. 177 and on the World Albums chart at No. 1.
K-pop fans watching the show took to Twitter to share clips of the season three episode of Lucifer, expressing surprise and excitement over the inclusion of the SHINee tune.
