SHINee is back.
On Thursday (May 26), KCON USA announced that the trendsetting K-pop quintet will return to Los Angeles for this year’s KCON LA. Joining SHINee and numerous other K-pop acts this July will also be the fresh-faced girl group I.O.I.
SHINee will headline the L.A. leg of KCON USA presented by Toyota less than three months after appearing at the Korea Times Festival, their first performance in the U.S. since 2014. Since breaking into the K-pop scene in 2008, the five members — Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho and Taemin — have been stalwart presences known for their innovative approach to music and peerless choreography. Early hits like “Replay” and “Lucifer” veered toward R&B and dance pop, but SHINee’s latest album Odd featured an array of styles including two singles, the electro-house “View” and Rocky Horror-inspired funk track “Married to the Music.” Both Jonghyun and Taemin have branched out with successful solo careers. The former has set himself up as an ascending singer-songwriter in the industry and released his newest album, She Is, on May 24.
Planning four albums before their group’s expiration date next year, the ambitious 11-member girl group I.O.I is the fourth female act added to this year’s KCON LA. (KCON NY, the east coast counterpart, is more male dominated with two out of nine acts attending featuring members of the fairer sex.) Formed through the television show Produce 101 early this year after beating out over 100 other women for a slot in the group, each of the members of I.O.I are managed by individual entertainment companies and the group’s time together has an expiration date. The energetic group, whose name stands for “ideals of idols,” has released a variety of bubbly pop songs, including “Dream Girls,” “Crush,” and the highly infectious “Pick Me.”
KCON LA will be held in Los Angeles at the Staples Center and Los Angeles Convention Center over June 29-31 and also features BTS as a headlining act. Along with SHINee and BTS, Girls’ Generation-TTS, CNBLUE, Block B, DEAN, GFriend, TWICE and Astro are included in this year’s concert lineup. In its fifth year, KCON LA is the largest event dedicated to all things Korean pop culture.
KCON USA also added two special guests to KCON NY. Im Siwan, a popular actor and member of the boy band ZE:A, and actress Park Bo Young will attend the two day event held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on June 24-25.
Tickets to attend KCON NY are already on sale while tickets for KCON LA go on sale June 3. Prices range from $50 to $250 for single tickets and $800 for all-access platinum tickets.
