Shazam’s social engagement strategies are paying off again. Today the company released a few statistics showing the number of interactions the platform received over the course of the Olympics, including more than one million interactions during the closing ceremony alone.
Specific numbers were not released, though the company did release a list of the most-engaged events throughout the games, which were centered around a top five of gymnastics, swimming, track and field, beach volleyball and basketball.
“This has been a major achievement for Shazam,” said Shazam CEO Andrew Fisher in a statement. “While the Super Bowl was an incredible one-day live event, the reaction to the Shazam Olympic experience over the course of the last seventeen days has exceeded our expectations.”
The top moments of each of the Olympics’ seventeen days — bookended by the opening and closing ceremonies — accompanied some of the biggest storylines that the games produced, including the men’s gymnastics final, Gabby Douglas’ preparations for the uneven bars gymnastics final, Michael Phelps’ record-tying 18th Olympic medal in the 200m butterfly event, and the U.S. women’s victory in the beach volleyball gold medal game.
The closing ceremony alone was worth over a million interactions, with fans discovering, buying and sharing the music from the finale. The top five songs were Eric Idle’s “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”; Jessie J/Tinie Tempah/Taio Cruz’s medley of “Price Tag/Written In The Stars/Dynamite”; The Spice Girls’ “Wannabe/Spice Up Your Life”; Ed Sheeran, Richard Jones, Nick Mason and Mike Rutherford’s version of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here”; and Beady Eye — former Oasis man Liam Gallagher’s new project — with their rendition of Oasis classic “Wonderwall.”
The top five tracks from the opening ceremony were Dizzee Rascall and Armand Van Helden’s “Bonkers”; Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells”; The London Symphony Orchestra’s “Chariots of Fire”; “Pretty Vacant” by the Sex Pistols; and David Holmes’ “I Heard Wonders.”
