Shawn Mendes made sure he kicked off the weekend right for his fans on Friday (June 3) by giving them what they really want: new music. The singer/songwriter dropped “Treat You Better,” the first single from his upcoming as-yet-untitled sophomore album, due out in the fall on Island Records.

The perfect-for-summer track — which he gave a 10-second sneak peek at during a commercial on the 2016 Billboard Music Awards — features a swaying tropical beat and promises about lavishing all the attention on a lover in a chorus that any Mendhead would find hard to resist. “Cuz I know I can treat you better than he can/ And any girl like you deserves a gentleman/ Tell me why are we wasting time on all your wasted time when you should be with me instead?,” he sings.
Mendes also posted an intense, unplugged version featuring just an acoustic guitar.

Fans were clearly loving it as well, with the song shooting up to #1 on the iTunes Top Songs chart at press time just hours after its release. According to his label, the track has already hit #1 in nine other markets, including Canada, Mexico and Brazil and is in the top five in 25 others. Mendes, 17, was slated to perform the song at the iHeart Theater in New York on Friday morning and take over iHeart’s Twitter and Snapchat feeds. He’s also in the midst of a world tour that will bring him back to the U.S. on July 15 with a show in Boca Raton, Florida. Before that, he’ll drop by The Today Show on July 8 to perform the new single as part of the morning show’s outdoor summer concert series.
The singer’s 2015 debut, Handwritten, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, spawning the hit single “Stitches.”
