On the brink of the Friday release of sophomore album Illuminate, Shawn Mendes debuted a music video for his new ballad “Mercy.”
The video starts by showcasing a dual perspective, where part of the video cuts to Mendes in what appears to be an empty warehouse and cuts back to him trapped in a sinking car flooding with water. This dichotomy allows the pop singer to metaphorically create the power that his love interest has over him as he drowns in the water-filled car. As the intensity of the song rises, the 18-year-old Canadian singer smashes an acoustic guitar and pushes over a drum kit.
Toward the end of the video, Mendes manages to escape the car and find his way to safety. He breaks through the surface of the water, setting himself free from the reign his love interest has over him. Accompanied by a soaking-wet shirt and vulnerable, protruding neck veins, the video shows Mendes “begging for mercy.”
The video comes full-circle as it ends just as solemnly as it started, with Mendes staring straight into the camera. The camera then cuts to a worm’s-eye view, illustrating cinematically that he now has the power he’s been trying to overcome.
