Shawn Mendes appeared on the U.K.’s Capital FM in England on Wednesday (April 25) to chat with host Roman Kemp about his new music, and while he was there, the Canadian singer helped a very nervous listener named Rob propose to his girlfriend, Rebecca.
Or so he thought.
“I’m really nervous. I’m so excited though,” Mendes said when Kemp told him he was going to help with the proposal.
What started as a simple Facetime call ended in tears when Rebecca shouted at Rob for making Mendes ask her if she would like to marry him. While Shawn scrambled to make Rob feel better about being rejected on air, Rob slid a “poem” he would have read to Rebecca if she’d said yes.
“Roes are red, violets are blue,” Mendes read. “Dear Shawn Mendes, we pranked you.”
“You did actually solidify yourself as the nicest man in pop,” Kemp joked afterward.
