Shakira bounds into the top five on the Social 50 chart, rising 10-2 to hit her highest position in over six months. (She was last this high on the Feb. 9-dated chart, when she was No. 1.) This week’s move is owed to Shakira’s fans love of her new baby, which spurred a massive spike in fan engagement this week.
The Social 50 ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views, song plays and reactions as measured by music analytics company Next Big Sound.
Her chart jump comes from a significant 415% increase in reaction on Facebook (as measured by Facebook’s “People Talking About This” function). During the charting week that started July 29, a picture of her baby Milan received a staggering 1.08 million likes. For comparison, an Aug. 1 post about her Elixer fragrance line only received 44,000 post likes.
The engagement led to a swell of activity on the platform, which yielded the addition of 380,000 new Facebook fans (a 12% increase over the previous week), contributing to the 480,000 overall addition of fans.
Also soaring on the tally is Tyga, who moves 29-12 following the debut of the official VEVO video premiere of “Show You” (July 24). The bow helped fuel over 10 million plays to Tyga’s VEVO channel during this chart week (ending Aug. 4; a 129% weekly increase). The VEVO premiere generated further fan acquisition: 168,000 new followers on Twitter and 37,000 new fans on Facebook (a 40% increase overall).
Other online surges in activity are centered around Britney Spears and Robin Thicke, both centered around major media events.
For Spears, it was the July 31 debut of “The Smurfs 2” movie that helped engineer her gain. The pop star’s new song “Ooh La La” is included on the film’s soundtrack, and Spears appeared at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on July 28.
The events led to a 27% increase in fan acquisition, and a 127% rise in conversation about Spears, lifting her into the top 5 (11-4) for the first time since the week of March 23.
As for Thicke, buzz generated by the July 30 release of his “Blurred Lines” album moved him 39-11 on the Social 50 (his highest position to date). The significant chart rise comes as Thicke adds 150,000 fans to his overall fan base (68% more than he usually adds in a given week).
Recapping the chart’s top 10 leaderboard: One Direction spends its second week in the No. 1 position, while Justin Bieber zips 7-3. Jennifer Lopez falls 4-5 while Taylor Swift remains steady at No. 6 above Justin Timberlake, who slides in rank (5-7). Miley Cyrus falls 3-8 while Katy Perry ascends into the top 10, moving 16-9. Anchoring the top 10 is Ariana Grande, who falls two spots to No .10.
