“Wolves” opens dark and gloomy as she sings about a “heavy blue,” throwing us back to that teaser image that first let us know the song was coming. The build of the bridge is almost country-pop, but the choral hook is all Marshmello sweetness. It’s the most decidedly Marshmello part of the tune, while the rest centers around Gomez’s vocal strength and weeping guitar chords.
It’s a mix of emotions from melancholy to hope. Gomez said in a recent interview to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe that the song’s lyrics mirror feelings and experiences she was going through when she recorded the song. It’s different than most of what’s on the radio, a definite autumnal anthem.
