Rock trio Secret Machines has finalized the track list for its second Reprise album, “Ten Silver Drops.” In the same vein as its nine-song 2004 predecessor, “Now Hear Is Nowhere,” the new set spreads eight songs over 45 minutes, including the eight-minute psychedelic epic “Daddy’s in the Doldrums.”
“Basically, all the material, with the exception of maybe two or three songs, was really finished and completed structurally and lyrically on tour,” vocalist/bassist Brandon Curtis recently told Billboard.com of the album, due April 18. “The feedback from performing in front of an audience was really instructive in how the songs were put together. I’m not sure I’d say I’d do it every time, but it was an interesting thing to do.”
Without shying away from such classic rock influences as Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, the material here lives up to Curtis’ description of “more focused and a little sharper” than its predecessor. Highlights include the propulsive “Faded Lines” and “Lightning Blue Eyes,” both of which are steeped in U2-style arena rock.
Elsewhere, the Band’s Garth Hudson contributes an accordion solo on “I Want To Know,” while piano and layered vocals power the album-closing power ballad “1,000 Seconds.”
The group has begun lining up 2006 tour dates, including a Jan. 18 show in London and another the next night in Manchester, England. The only North American performance confirmed at deadline is a March 12 set at the Langerado Music Festival in Sunrise, Fla.
