Panamanian crooner Sech treated fans to a riveting set of reggaeton bangers on Tuesday (September 8). The livestream performance – a collaboration between Sech and Honda Stage – was produced in support of Feeding America, a hunger-relief non-profit that’s providing aid to communities that have been hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic. “I want to do my part to see if we can improve all this,” he said in Spanish, before jumping into his four-song set.
Buoyed by his penchant for R&B-boosted reggaeton, Sech spanned a handful of hits, including songs from his latest release 1 of 1 (via Rich Music), his 2020 sophomore album that peaked at No. 4 on the Top Latin Albums chart. Sech kicked off the virtual showcase with the infectious dembow riddim of “Relación,” his club-ready Latin pop hit that celebrates women empowerment and their departure from toxic relationships. Produced by Dímelo Flow and Slow Mike, “Relación” recently landed in the top 10 of the Hot Latin Songs Chart and looks to gain another bump up the charts following the release of a star-studded remix that featured Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Rosalia and Farruko.
Amid a dimly lit stage, the urbano balladeer followed the single by retracing the roots of Panama’s precursor to reggaeton – reggae en español — with a solo rendition of his Nando Boom assisted, “Se Va Viral.” “I think I’ve mentioned several times that one of my greatest influences is the reggae en español sound from Panama — Nando Boom, El General and many other artists that have motivated me to do what I do,” he muses. “I used to dream of being like them.”
A testament to his dreaming big mentality, Sech has been reawakening the reggae en español sound since his 2019 breakthrough album Sueños. Moreover, the singer-songwriter is helping propel urbano’s move towards a more melodic future and his 2019 global hit “Otro Trago,” was proof of that stylistic shift.
“From that beginning to this moment, that song changed my life, and you all lived it with me, whether [it was listening to it] at parties or at home,” he says about “Otro Trago,” before capping off the show with an electric performance of the addictive record that was hard to miss throughout most of last year.
