Models drenched in couture, wearing sneakers, hit the runway at the Grand Palais in Paris for the Chanel Spring 2014 Haute Couture fashion show held on Tuesday morning (Jan. 21). The emperor of fashion, and head of the house of Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, created an icey world where athleticism is serene, model Cara Delevingne rules in a feathered crown and singers emerge from giant icebergs.
A glistening white wall spun to reveal the musical act. Karl loves himself a grand entrance. Remember back at the spring 2012 collection when Florence Welch emerged from a gigantic seashell? That brought more under the sea drama than anything “The Little Mermaid’s” Ursula could have mustered up. This time around it was shaggy chic French pop star Sébastien Tellier and his orchestra.
The 12-piece emsemble and Sébastien were stretched across a grand staircase behind the runway. Lily Allen looked on from the front row as models in sneakers by Massaro made of python, with lace, pearls, and tweed, pranced down the runway. No doubt a result of the comfortable footwear and sweetly textured beats.
We caught up with this Parisian musician to get the scoop and his take from the dazzling show. Check out our interview below.
Billboard: How did Karl ask you to perform at his show?
Sébastien Tellier: Everything happened very simply: Karl listened to “Confection,” my latest album. He liked it and called me to offer me to play a few songs for Chanel Haute Couture show at the Grand Palais.
What was your favorite part about performing at the Chanel show?
The quest for beauty and perfection particularly moved me. For a few moments, you escape from the mediocrity of the world. Beauty is the sweetest drug.
What was something exciting that happened backstage or in rehearsals that now one was aware of?
We drank “Belle Époque” champagne, the same we shared with my wife when I proposed to her.
How did you choose the songs that you played?
Karl chose the songs which highlight the collection. He also asked me to rearrange a track, “Coco”, in a tango version. That was an excellent idea. It was one of the most beautiful moments of the show.
Do you have plans to perform at any upcoming fashion weeks?
Music and fashion make a very nice couple, so I could easily. Let me try again.
Who’s your personal style icon?
Miles Davis remains my master regarding style, especially towards the end of his life. Jazzmen are often poorly dressed. Not him!
