French electro house producer Sebastian is known for making some of the wildest, funkiest, crunchiest sounds this side of 2003. French director Gaspard Noé is known for making some of the trippiest, most depraved and mind-bending films of this generation. The two run in the same circles, having both worked with Daft Punk and Thomas Bangalter, specifically. Now, the pair come together with an epileptic fit of a music video for Sebastian’s latest.
The proceeding teaser clip for “Thirst” flashed violenly in red and blue (those sensitive to strobe lighting should take caution), calling back to Noé’s 2010 exploration of life, death and psychedelia, Enter The Void. That violence is mirrored in the full presentation, a one-shot scene wherein a man attacks a woman in a rainbow-strobe bar, only to have the violent act repaid three-fold. It’s cinematic and alarming, both in visual and in sonics, with a tense but beautiful breakdown in the middle. The video features production credit from French fashion designer Saint Laurent who says of the treatment simply “violence brings violence.” Sebastian makes a cameo in the beginning and end.
Sebastian and Noé worked together on the “Love In Motion” music video in 2012, the last single from the producer’s 2011 debut LP Total. He’s since worked on Frank Ocean‘s Blonde, famously appearing as the frustrated Frenchman in “Facebook Story.” He’s also worked with Charlotte Gainsbourg and composed the soundtrack for Yves Saint Laurent’s Winter 18 Collection campaign. In 2017, he contributed a surreal tune to Ed Banger’s Ed Rec 100 compilation. There have been rumors of a new album all the while.
