Sean Lennon, son of Beatle John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and Stella McCartney, daughter of Beatle Paul and Linda McCartney were captured in a photo taken Tuesday (Jan. 10) at the Cotton Club in New York’s Harlem.
Fashion designer McCartney was in New York for her pre-fall fashion show. The show brought out other celebrities including Jerry Seinfeld, Naomi Watts and Julianne Moore. Alicia Keys performed at the show.
Both McCartney and Lennon were born after the break-up of the Beatles and didn’t experience the Beatles years, but were alive during the ’70s when the relationship of John Lennon and Paul McCartney had their ups and downs.
Lennon, 41, was born to John Lennon and Yoko Ono on Oct. 9, 1975, on his father’s 35th birthday, the Beatles co-singer and songwriter’s second child. (His half-brother, Julian Lennon, is 53.) The birth of Sean Lennon was the reason John Lennon decided to get away from the music business and become a househusband to raise Sean. John Lennon’s song “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy),” from the 1980 album Double Fantasy, was written for Sean.
“If you know your history, it took us a long time to have a live baby. And I wanted to give five solid years to Sean. I hadn’t seen Julian, my first son (by ex-wife Cynthia), grow up at all. And now there’s a 17-year-old man on the phone talkin’ about motorbikes,” Lennon said in a Newsweek interview published in September, 1980, three months before he was killed. “Yoko became the breadwinner, taking care of the bankers and deals. And I became the housewife. It was like one of those reversal comedies!”
Sean Lennon is single, but has had a relationship with Charlotte Kemp Muhl since 2006. She is also his musical partner in Ghost of a Saber Toothed Tiger.
In recent years, the young Lennon and Ono have crusaded together against fracking. This past summer, he and Ono attended the 10th anniversary celebration of the Beatles’ Cirque du Soleil LOVE show at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. Chimera Music, founded by Muhl, Lennon and Yuka Honda, recently began reissuing his mother Yoko Ono’s Apple Records albums.
Stella McCartney, 45, was born on Sept. 3, 1971, and is the third child of Linda McCartney, and Paul McCartney’s second. Stella infamously wore a t-shirt saying “about f—ing time” when her father was inducted as a solo performer in the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame on March 15, 1999. She was also very vocal in her opposition to McCartney’s second wife Heather Mills.
Stella has made a name for herself as one of the world’s top fashion designers. Her father has often attended her fashion shows. Like her father, she is a vegetarian, has been very vocal about her support for his Meat Free Monday campaign, and supports PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). She has been married to Alashdair (cq) Willis since 2003. They have four children, two boys and two girls.
On his Facebook page, Lennon made a comment on a picture from the show, “At @stellamccartney Cotton Club bash the other night. Was nice to see the familams.”
Though this was a rare instance of Lennon and Stella McCartney being photographed together, it’s not the first time he has lent his support to a McCartney family member. He and Primus frontman Les Claypool, his current collaborator in the Claypool Lennon Delirium, were photographed at a concert given by James McCartney, Stella’s younger brother, in Athens, Georgia, last June.
