Sean Lennon and Wilco guitarist Nels Cline have written music for Edet Belzberg’s documentary “Watchers of the Sky” that will make its world premiere Jan. 20 at the Temple Theater in Park City, Utah.

It is Lennon’s third time writing music for a film, having previously composed music for Jordan Galland’s films “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead” and “Alter Egos.” It is Cline’s second time, having previously scored 1994’s “Hard Drive.”
Lennon signed on to write music for the film late in the proces after he was shown the movie to see if he had ideas. Cline, coincidentally, was at the same screening. Both then called on musician friends to help, getting Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto to organize a recording session. Beyond the collective improvisations, Lennon has solo pieces on piano and celeste.
The duo will be credited as supplying additional original music as Claudia Ragazzi is the film’s composer.
“Watchers of the Sky” comprises four stories about people who have worked to stop genocide in Germany, Rwanda, Darfur and Syria. Lennon was particularly touched by the film’s central character, the Polish lawyer Raphael Lemkin, who defined the crime of genocide in the 1930s.
Jazz bassist Derrick Hoge scored Belzberg’s last film, “The Recruiter.”
