British trio Scouting For Girls completed their rise to No. 1 on the U.K. album chart yesterday with their self-titled debut album. Swedish DJ-artist Basshunter moved into a second week atop the singles chart with “Now You’re Gone” (Hard2Beat).
“Scouting For Girls” debuted on the U.K. bestsellers at No. 12 last September, while the band were riding the top 10 with the single “She’s So Lovely.” Its revival comes in the wake of SSG’s second top 10 hit “Elvis Ain’t Dead,” which climbs 10-8 this week. In the past four weeks the album has rebounded 33-12-4-1.
Scouting For Girls’ sales spurt relegated last week’s bestselling album, Amy Macdonald’s “This Is the Life” (Vertigo), to No. 2. Take That’s “Beautiful World” (Polydor) held at No. 3, as it celebrated a year on the chart, and another former No. 1, Newton Faulkner’s “Hand Built By Robots” (Ugly Truth), climbed anew, 7-4. Robert Plant & Alison Krauss’ “Raising Sand” (Decca/Rounder) moved back 6-5.
British Sea Power had the album chart’s highest new entry as “Do You Like Rock Music” (Rough Trade) opened at No. 10. Liverpool band the Wombats powered back 31-13 with “A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation” (14th Floor), as its new single “Moving to New York” raced 37-13.
Basshunter’s single now has combined physical and download sales of 92,000, and held firm at the top in the face of a strong start by London newcomer Adele. Already a BRIT Award winner (of the new Critics’ Choice award) ahead of the release of her debut album “19,” she arrived at No. 2 with “Chasing Pavements” (XL Recordings).
Also climbing in the new singles top 10 were “Superstar” (Atlantic) by Lupe Fiasco featuring Matthew Santos, 7-4; Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop the Music” (Def Jam), 6-5; Kanye West’s “Homecoming” (also Def Jam), 14-9; and Robyn’s “Be Mine” (Konichiwa), 23-10. Manchester band the Courteneers debuted with “What Took You So Long” (Polydor) at No. 20, while veteran hitmakers Madness extended their chart span to more than 28 years, since “The Prince” debuted in September 1979, as “NW5” (Lucky Seven) debuted at No. 24.
On Billboard’s pan-European composite sales charts, “Back To Black” (Universal Island) gave Amy Winehouse a fourth consecutive week at No. 1 on European Top 100 Albums, while “Apologize” (Mosley/Blackground/Interscope) by Timbaland presents OneRepublic is in a ninth week at the top of Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.
