After laying low in 2011, bombastic pop diva Santigold (formerly Santogold) is back with a new video for “Big Mouth,” a track off her upcoming sophomore effort, “Master Of My Make Believe.” As one may expect, the half animated/half live-action clip is full of stimulating imagery and bouncy, club-ready tribal beats.
Video: Santigold, “Big Mouth”
“Big Mouth” picks up where older tracks like “Creator” left off, with intense syncopations, a relentless hook behind Santigold’s aggressive, confrontational delivery, and distinct world music flavor. Combining animation with live-action shots, the video amplifies Santigold’s bright and frantic visual style, mixing dancers, a twisted animated tiger eating a bizarro blonde mermaid (which may or may not be a dig at Lady Gaga), desert and underwater locales, strange cacti and more in an epilepsy-inducing adventure.
Although “Big Mouth” has been confirmed for “Master Of My Make Believe,” a rep for Santigold tells Billboard.com that the track is not an official single from the album and that a proper single will come next month. “Master Of My Make Believe” will arrive this spring on Downtown/Atlantic, although a specific date hasn’t been set yet.
“I still have the songs that sound very electronic and clubby,” Santigold told Billboard.com last summer about the album, “but I have a couple ballads on this one — my own type of ballads, where they just sound big, like the way some old Kate Bush or Peter Gabriel songs were…on this one song, we did a whole section that has a bottle used as the percussion, so there’s layers upon layers of Greg Kurstin playing a bottle and literally filling it with different layers of water, and stacking each note. Mixed with a marimba and taiko drums!”
