Carlos Santana and Herbie Hancock joined roots rockers Los Lobos on stage last night (March 1) at the Beverly Hills Hilton during a fundraiser that saluted the guitarist’s charity work.
Together, they performed the Santana track “Guajira” for attendees. Hancock stuck around to play some jazzy piano on Los Lobos’ cover of Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba,” its biggest hit.
The event was hosted by the San Francisco-based California Rural Legal Assistance Inc., which represents migrant farm workers and their families. Santana and his wife, Deborah, were honored for their Milagro Foundation, which has distributed more than $2 million since 1998 to grassroots organizations that work with underprivileged children around the world.
In his acceptance speech, Santana said more was being spent per capita on incarceration than on education, and inspired a chorus of booing when he invoked the names of California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and President George W. Bush.
When someone yelled out “Carlos for governor,” Santana said he once had a dream about entering politics, but decided he could make more of a difference “by inviting you to perceive that you are a multi-dimensional spirit.”
Los Lobos and Santana, perhaps the two best-known exponents of Latin-based rock in the United States, have often played and toured together, but last night’s gig marked their first collaboration in about five years, according to a Los Lobos road crew member.
